4/11/01 - Boating to Cabbage Key & Captiva Island

Cabbage Key is one of the many places on the west coast of Florida that are only available via boat. Today, we boated out to Cabbage Key and then to Captiva Island. Joining us on our voyage were our good friends from Michigan -- Todd & Jen Schafer. :)

As you will see, we had a blast (and saw a flying set of port-a-potties)!

Here's some interesting tidbits about Cabbage Key:

  • Cabbage Key is a small island with nature trails, some cottages, and the Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant.
  • The Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant is the place that inspired Jimmy Buffet to write "Cheeseburger in Paradise".
  • The ride to Cabbage Key took a little under an hour at cruising speed - ~ 28mph.
  • Once you arrive, prepare to have a 'grumpy old man' (aka Terry, the dockmaster) help you dock your boat. ;)

  • Please be seated, and enjoy your ride!

Fillin' gas at Gulf Harbour and...
    flying port-a-potties!

Misbehavin' at the Gulf Harbour gas station! Captain Tara Beth successfully docked us first try (she rules!)

    Jump aboard!

Here, sit in one of the front seats... The weather today --
    88' and sunny!

As we left Gulf Harbour, we couldn't help but notice FLYING PORT-A-POTTIES!!

    "Hey, let me outta here!"
we thought we heard from one of the port-a-potties.

Notice the guys on stilts with a strap connection, just in case they fall over the edge...

    Look out below!!

    Welcome to Cabbage Key!

...And of course the Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant, the inspiration for the tune "Cheeseburger in Paradise"
    (Jimmy Buffet).

"Howdy!" from Tara, Charly2, Jen & Todd!

People are packin' it in here on a Weds in April -- notice in the distance another boat coming in.

Ahh.... Everyone's ready to eat a cheeseburger in paradise...

"Hi Ma! Hi Dad! Hi Sis! Hi Grandpa & Grandma & everyone else who is going to see this picture!" Todd says, "I'm going to drink...

    ...this...

    ...just for you!"
    (Glug Glug Glug)

Charly & Tara welcome you saying --
"Howdy! Hope you are enjoying the views of our journey to Cabbage Key!"

There he is, doing his duty, dockmaster Terry!
(If you look real close you can see our boat to his left - hint: beige canopy).

    Step off the dock, and...

the Cabbage Key gift shop conveniently awaits you.

Yummy yummy! Cabbage Key Restaurant & Inn serves all types of customers.

That lady has a metal leg! (Nah... Just an illusion).

The brick stairway out to the docks...

    Ah... Flowers...
    Have a good eye?
See if you can find Todd in this picture.

A view to the east toward Useppa Island.

The Cabbage Key Bath House -- it said "Shower with a Friend!" (Sorry, I neglected to get a picture of the sign... Maybe next time!)

And here we go, back to our boat!
No wait, Tara decided we needed to walk the nature trail...

As we walked the trail, this angry little fellow was scooting along -- giving us evil looks.

Jen and Tara posed for the camera, Jen yelled "Okay, suck it in!!" (and did)

As we made our way to Captiva Island to do some beachcombing, we saw these dolphins!

We dropped anchor about 50' feet off shore at Captiva Island, and swam from the boat to the beach. Each of us got to taste quite a bit of really tasty saltwater (yuk!)

Here they are again -- the dolphins, performing for your viewing pleasure.

Here's a typical view of the shoreline from out in the Gulf of Mexico. Waves today were 2 to 4 feet.

Tara (and Jen) enjoyed sitting in the front while we rode the coast.

Bye bye! We hope you enjoyed our trip today -- we sure did!
