12/31/00 - Tour of Ohio Key, FL

Welcome to Ohio Key, Florida, located in the Florida Lower Keys at Mile Marker 39 on US1. Almost all of Ohio Key is dedicated to Sunshine Key RV Resort & Marina, and as you will see, it's quite a cool place to stay!

We extended our stay here due to the flu (thank goodness they had cable TV!) -- we did manage to have quite a bit of fun in Key West and on some of the Keys in between.

Enjoy!

"I am Borg, I am K of 9." Pean says in a monotone roo.

"I am Kling-on, and they call me Beckus!" Becky says in her best kling-on voice.

"We are your commanding officers - Number 1 and Number 2." Char & Tara say to K of 9 and Beckus.

"We fight the evil forces that surround us!" K of 9 says.

Here's our home-on-the-road at Sunshine Key RV Resort & Marina (site 190). Little did we know we'd be watching a lot of cable TV here while we battled the flu!!

Here's a look to the south.

And a look to the north!

A quick walk to the east and we are at the beach!

Looking out into the distance you can see other keys.

Sunshine Key RV Resort is definitely a good place to stay if you like awesome views and to be right next to the water. Unlike some of the RV Resorts we have been to, these guys do allow tents and pop-ups.

Here's a picture of US 1, the route that connects all of the keys.

Holy BIG rigs! This one costs about $350,000!

Tara demonstrates how big the palm trees are!

Here's the old bridge that used to connect the keys, in 1982 a series of new bridges where built for US 1.

BREAKIN' THE LAW --
BREAKIN' THE LAW!

Yep, we, along with others, decided to break the law and publically use the bridge... :)

People generally fish from the old bridges, they do make a great walking path too.

After walking down the bridge for quite a while, we turned around and snapped this photo of Sunshine Key RV Resort.

Ahh -- nice clear water...
The water around the keys is fairly shallow -- usually 3 to 10 feet.

Here's a look straight down from off of the bridge.

This guy said "Howdy Tourists...

Watch me get some grub!"

The photo doesn't show it, but this bird was tall! He walked by us just like a person, too.

Mile marker 39 on US 1.
The pipe near the bottom supplies all of the keys with phone service and some power (some of the keys have their own power generators).

The official Florida Department of Transportation OHIO KEY sign.

Flowers on the last day of the year... :)

Here's a view from US 1 into the resort.

Here's the office, they do have a fairly nice "modem friendly" setup -- what was amazing was the fact that we got 53K connections when we connected to a local Big Pine Key number!

Tara points out our site on the big map.

And here's... The marina!

Quite a few interesting things could be seen when we walked around the marina.
Here are barnacles forming on the seawalls.

A school of very small fish visit the marina.

We are not sure what kind of fish this was, but it was very cool nonetheless. It's beak glowed blue!

There must have been a couple of hundred of these guys in the shade under the dock!

A view of the fishing, and swimming dock.

The water around the dock was 3 to 5 feet deep...

and crystal clear.

Bye bye!
