11/20/00 - Welcome to Stone Mountain, Georgia!

Stone Mountain is definitely a really cool place to visit. Basically, Stone Mountain is a stone formation about 20 miles due east of Atlanta, that rises about 800' feet above the ground around it. It stretches about 5 miles from north to south (with a gradual walk up incline on the south side, which is an excellent workout) and about 2 miles from east to west.

When we were at Stone Mountain, we visited all of the attractions including the Skylift, the train around the mountain, the auto-museum, the Riverboat and the Plantation. Unfortunately, it was raining (and about 40') so we did not take any pictures that day. Char's bro and sis, Adam & Kate, braved the cold, rainy weather with us.

As Gramps suggested in his RV training, people who camp are almost always friendly and helpful... (It's reassuring when you are alone on the road and pull in to a new campground knowing this!) As we finished hooking up everything on our RV, we realized we had enough sewer hose, however, we needed a coupler to piece together two hoses to reach to the sewer hookup. Our new neighbor's (the Bowers from Huntsville, Alabama), who just pulled in themselves, saw the puzzled look on our faces, and after talking to us for a while, gave us an extra coupler they happened to have! In return, Mr. John Bower simply said "If someone needs help when you are on the road, be sure to help 'em out!". We certainly will. Thanks again, John & Family.

Even though it was nice and sunny in these pictures, there was about a 45' degree wind chill. Enjoy!

Stone Mountain Campground offered fairly level sites, 50 amp electrical service, water & sewer hookup. This was our first real 'hook-up', and aside from our sewer hose being too short, everything went well.

We were at site 149, as you can see by the puddles, this was the first day of sun after two full days of constant rain.

Those pine trees were tall!

A view of the river that flows through Stone Mountain, we rode on this river in the Riverboat ride.

If this isn't a perfect Windows(tm) background picture, I don't know what is! :)

Another nice shot of the river.

A view up toward the entrance to Stone Mountain Campground, our site is on the left.

The other half of the view up to the entrance.

Pean, curious as ever, watches me take photos.

Here's the rest of our camp site.

Parallel to the road that takes you to Stone Mountain Campground there is a huge golf course. We did not to play golf due to the rain and temperature -- maybe next time!

There it is, through the trees! Stone Mountain!

Tara took this photo from the Jeep as we returned to our camp site, nice isn't it? To give you an idea of how big it is, there is a rather huge building at the top, which is to the right of a really tall tower and to the left of one of the Skylift supports.

Yep, we were bundled up and ready for the cold outdoors! From the left, Char, Kate, Tara, & Adam.
